Time and Place: New York at Kaufman Concert Hall on May 11, 1965

Abstract: Fifth lecture of the Humanist Psychoanalysis series, given by Erich Fromm on the invitation of the Young Men’s and Young Women’s Hebrew Association on May 11, 1965, at Kaufman Concert Hall in New York.

In this lecture, Fromm discusses sexuality in relation to the concept of Eros as well as the Freudian theory of libido from a gender perspective. Fromm then introduces in the concept of “machismo” and discusses the differences between “maleness” and “manliness” and the ways of facing aggression: Men tending to use physical force, while women tending to use ridicule. The lecture (69’) is followed by Fromm’s answers (21’) to questions from the audience.
