Time and Place: New York at Kaufman Concert Hall on May 4, 1965

Abstract: Third lecture of the Humanist Psychoanalysis series, given by Erich Fromm on the invitation of the Young Men’s and Young Women’s Hebrew Association on May 4, 1965, at Kaufman Concert Hall in New York.

Fromm continues his discussion of what we are aware of and what is unconscious due to social filters. He explains the various filters that unconscious thought must goes through before becoming conscious thought, such as the social filter, the family filter, and the individual filter, as well as how unconsciousness is connected to the ego, superego, and persona. The lecture (66’) is followed by Fromm’s answers (29’) to questions from the audience.
