Humanist Psychoanalysis Lecture 2

Time and Place: New York at Kaufman Concert Hall on April 29, 1965

Abstract: Second lecture of the Humanist Psychoanalysis series, given by Erich Fromm on the invitation of the Young Men’s and Young Women’s Hebrew Association on April 29, 1965, at Kaufman Concert Hall in New York.

After addressing audience questions about the previous lecture, Fromm analyzes Sigmund Freud’s concept of the unconscious. Freud viewed the unconscious primarily as something dark that must be kept repressed. For Fromm the unconscious represents all human potentialities – the good and the bad ones –, while what we are aware of is only a small sector social filters permit to come to awareness. The lecture (63’) is followed by Fromm’s answers (30’) to questions from the audience.
